The government has announced that the temporary changes to Right to Rent Checks will end after 31st August 2021.
The temporary adjustments due to the Covid- 19 pandemic allowed rental checks to be undertaken using video calls or scanned/photographed copies of original documents. Once the changes are lifted on 31st August, face-to-face and physical document checks will be required once again and Landlords and letting agents will be required to check original documents, and right to rent using the form on the government website.
In specific cases, landlords and letting agents can apply to the Home Office for verification but should try to get the documents in the first instance. Such circumstances are where a person has an application or appeal outstanding with the Home Office or, the Home Office is currently holding the person’s documents
If a tenant does not have the right documents you must contact the Home Office Landlord Checking Service if the tenant cannot provide the right documents. Once you have submitted your request to the Landlord Checking Service you will get an answer within 2 working days. You must keep this response to protect against a civil penalty.
