Questions To Ask When Choosing Your Student House

So you’ve moved out of halls? Choosing your next student home is an exciting activity to do, especially as it’s the place you will be spending most of your time outside of university. This guide should help you to make sure that the property you are looking at, is right for all of your needs.

Are you sharing with like minded housemates?

In a student home you can be sharing with a lot of other people, and spending so much time in close quarters, it’s really important that the housemates you sign the contract with, you’ll be happy to live with. Whether cleanliness, quiet time or socialising is important to you, it’s best that your housemates all have the same priorities, to make sure it’s a harmonious living space. We also recommend choosing the right person to be Lead Tenant. This is the housemate who will be liaising with the Landlord or letting agency should there be the need to, so they ideally need to be responsible and efficient.

Is the property in a good location?

There are a few things to consider when it comes to location and it comes down to personal preference. Whether you’d prefer your house to be in walking distance to the university or prefer being closer to local amenities, it’s important to weigh up your options. Whether it’s to travel into university, or back to your home city for a visit if it isn’t Leeds, it is worth checking if the property has easy access to transport links. Is the house in a quiet residential area, or a student area? If you have a car, does the house have a place to park? These are all factors that will play an important part in your life as a student.

Will bills be included?

So that you and your housemates can budget accordingly, and know the true cost of the property, it’s important to find out if the monthly payment includes bills or whether that will have to be paid on top of your rent. If the bills are paid on top, you should find out the average rate to assess whether you can afford the monthly payments.

What are the letting agent reviews?

Online reviews can be found for most letting agents (us included). Providing they have the correct profiles set up with notable providers such as Google, this means you can quickly take a look at what people are saying about the company you’re looking to rent from. If there are any unsatisfied customers it’s good to see if the letting agent tried to find a reasonable solution to the problem. It’s important to know that you are in safe capable hands when taking the big step to rent a student home.
